The legend

“British officers cut open two of Hampi's singing pillars to find the secret, and found nothing inside.”

What the evidence shows

No record of that survives. The pillars are solid granite, and they ring because a slender stone column vibrates like a bell, its note set by its length and thickness.

What the evidence shows

The text was dictated between 1918 and 1923, and in 1974 five IISc engineers found that none of its craft could fly. India's real flight runs from Mysore's iron rockets to Chandrayaan-3.

“Krishna's golden city of Dwarka lies under the sea off Gujarat, just as the Mahabharata says.”

What the evidence shows

There are man-made ruins on the seabed, and this coast really has sunk. But no find ties them to the epic, and much of it, like the stone anchors, looks centuries younger.

The legend

“Ancient India rebuilt lost noses with plastic surgery, long before Europe could.”

What the evidence shows

True, and documented: the Sushruta Samhita describes a skin-flap nose, and in 1794 British surgeons watched it done near Pune. The “first surgeon” and “head transplant” claims are not.
